BomberGames claims to have informed Sega of the game’s existence multiple times during development without issue.

All “Streets of Rage Remake” download links on BomberGames’ site have been taken down due to copyright issues with Sega. I had to drop the difficulty to easy to finish it, even after repeated attempts on normal. In fact, my only real complaint is that it’s too difficult. Between the branching campaign and wealth of unlockables, “SoRR” is just too good to ignore, especially as it is free. Naturally, the other half of the appeal is punching in faces with a friend. Half the appeal of “SoRR” is the nostalgia, and if you grew up playing the original games, you should play this remake. Manly doesn’t even begin to describe it.ĭespite my gushing, I wouldn’t say “Streets of Rage Remake” is the best beat ‘em up available, but that’s not the point. Depending on which path you take, you’ll either hit ramps on a jet ski or pull off wheelies on a motorcycle, all while backhanding enemies who drive up from behind. Along your path to the final boss, you’ll fight boxing kangaroos, robots with maces for arms and a cross between an armored chimpanzee and Wolverine. Though the move list for each character isn’t very long, the variety in enemies and stages more than makes up for it.
And no “Streets of Rage” game would be complete without the hilariously over-the-top police backup special that rains down bazooka death on enemies. Simply punching and kicking is as satisfying as it gets for 16-bit sprites, and players can pick up limited-use weapons to dole out virtual violence with pipes and knives.

The “Streets of Rage” series hasn’t embedded itself into player’s memories, but the games were mindless fun back in the day, and they’re just as fun today. I know I’m rambling about features, but is the game any good? You bet your blast processing it is. Heck, it even includes options for scan lines and a sound test to fully envelop players in the warm folds of nostalgia. To make things easier on mortal players, the remake also includes save states, a godsend for those who can’t finish the rather grueling campaign in a single sitting. “SoRR” includes support for co-op with another player-a big draw in any beat ‘em up-and even has the option of a surprisingly bright AI partner. Finishing the campaign will earn in-game credit to purchase extra characters, modes, cheats and a full-blown map editor, which lets you replace weapons with light sabers in the campaign, for example. The amount of content in the story mode is already impressive, but the developers added many unlockables that weren’t present in the original games. Having effectively made the game itself, BomberGames cleverly stitched together stages from all three games in the series to form a sprawling mega-campaign with branching paths. All three games were painstakingly reproduced from research of the original games, and after a whopping eight years in development, the remake is pixel-perfect in looks and mechanics.īut don’t let the remake moniker fool you into thinking “SoRR” is a straight-up reproduction.

The amount of love BomberGames puts into its project is literally ingrained into the source code of “SoRR.” That’s because the game was completely written from scratch, meaning not a single line of the games’ original code was used. The people at BomberGames took it upon themselves to bring the series back into fighting shape in the form of an absolutely stellar fan game. “Streets of Rage” is a well-loved “beat ‘em up” series that saw three games on the Sega Genesis, but has received no new entries since the release of the third game in 1994.

The game I speak of is BomberGames’ free “Streets of Rage Remake” (“SoRR”).
But sometimes, returning to a classic game is like revisiting a long-lost friend-he greets you, and then you two walk out onto the rage-filled streets to dole out your violent brand of vigilante justice. Rose-tinted glasses can be shattered in a heartbeat. Anybody who has ever dug up a classic game from his or her childhood knows that nostalgia can sometimes be a letdown.
